ESD Platform WILL
'WILL' is creating
For realizing a sustainable society.
Work, Inclusion, Life & Love ...
What is ESD Platform WILL?
WILL, a youth organization promotes "Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)" with a diverse group of people and organizations. We aim to create a society where everyone can be involved and realize "sustainable development (SD)". WILL members, while taking action on their own, seek to find methods of multi-layered and pluralistic "encounters" and "connections" between people in society.
Ofunato ESD Project
After 3.11the Great East Japan Earthquake, we started the support project in Akasaki-cho, Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture
Sustainable island building project @Oku-Komyoen
"ESD Volunteer Volaban" has been volunteerd at a Hansen's disease sanatorium Oku-Komyoen since 2007.
WILL and RCE Hyogo-Kobe collaborate to operate this portal site.
Through activities in various fields related to ESD / SD, you can deepen your learning from multiple angles.
WILL members are trying to learn ESD practically by going out to various areas while keeping their focus on the main project.
This center, where WILL has its secretariat, has eight core divisions.
We are promoting the practice and research towards the creation of the multi-layered pluralistic community
The management team, consisting of the secretariat, steering committee members, and council members, is responsible for the practical aspects of project design and program promotion. We aim to create a platform that facilitates the activities of our members!
What does each letter in the acronym W,I,L,L, represent?
WILL focuses on WORK (volunteer work, workshops, work camps).
Isn't a volunteer a social device that easily crosses the boundaries of each specialty? Through volunteering, we become aware of various problems and know the ideals pursued in the fields. What kind of volunteers will make you aware of what social problems?
There are various methods that allow participants to loosely connect with each other and establish their own independence. We develop the methods based on each period the concrete circumstances (time, place, person, purpose and environment) and consider their meanings and effects.
We focus on Workcamps as the place where people are not good at interacting with people and putting themselves in a group can have a little confidence and reconsider what they thought to be natural. Workcamps may teach us the importance of face-to-face holistic and physical relationships with human and other beings, land, water, air, nature, etc.
Participants who are taking action are not the only members of WILL. We promote ESD with multi-stakeholders.
Moreover, “Everyone is the Protagonist” in WILL. Each member is different, from those with disabilities, those of differing nationalities, ages, etc. We promote the creation of an ”Inclusive Community” that is not stagnant, but actively changes and is accepting of its varying members.
Life & Love
Through WORK we are exposed to varying values and belief systems, compelling us to observe our own lifestyle. We create a platform that encourages encounters and connections, thus leading to a sustainable society, that values all different kinds of INOCHI.
*INOCHI: Japanese pluriversal notion; lives, soul, spirit, existence of people, animals, plants and so on.
How can we create a sustainable society ...?
What kind of places and ways are needed for people who are socially divided and characterized by immersive communication to collaborate each other for our common future?
What kind of places and ways are needed for specialists who are pursuing expertise in a particular area to respect each other and collaborate together?
What kind of places and ways are needed for stakeholders with somewhat conflicting interests to understand each other's positions and history, and to create encounters to encourage problem solving for the future?
What kind of places and ways are needed to transform social structures and lifestyles through the mindful activities of all people?
At WILL, We are thinking about these questions,
creating multiple practical hypotheses, and working
to create a place for "encounters" and "connections"
toward the creation of a "sustainable society.
The relation between ESD and WILL
▶ ︎ ESD and WILL
The ‘E’ in ‘ESD’ stands for ‘Education’, however, in our opinion it also indicates “Empowerment’, ‘Enhancement’ and ‘Encounter’.
WILL does not focus on education in a narrow sense, instead, we stress the situations and methods of the empowerment, and the way of encounters which invent incidental learning.
WILL is a platform in which we can consider and invent education in a broad sense to nurture human development.
▶ ︎ SDGs and WILL
ESD means ‘E for SD’(Education for Sustainable Development) . We are compelled to consider the relation between ‘E’ and ‘SD’. ‘E’ exists in the movement of ‘SD’, and ‘SD’ is created through ‘E’. It is just like we need the soil of democracy when we learn democracy. We keep considering the mutual and integral relation between ‘E’ and ‘SD’.
Therefore, rethinking the relation between SDGs(Sustainable Development Goals) and ‘E’ is also the purpose of WILL. We do not uncritically accept the goals. We are trying to contemplate with many people whether or not they are appropriate goals for sustainable society.
Through various activities we offer the opportunity for one to participate in sustainable development. In order to do this, we connect with diverse fields and people to gain experience through various activities.
Through field activities and workshops, we will deepen our understanding of WILL's aims and what is important to us. WILL will start its year here.
WILL members will be dispersed to participate in a wide variety of volunteer activities. By visiting various fields and learning about activities in multiple areas, we will consider the meaning of platforms and learn about ESD in a practical way. We will use what we learn here to think of ways to create places where diverse people can interact and invite people to join.
This is the main program of WILL, where participants experience the "kata" of encounters, the core of ESD. Various volunteer works and workshops will be held at the National Hansen's Disease Sanatorium Oku Komyoen. In this extraordinary space and time, participants will be freed from the constraints of their daily lives, encounter their true selves, and look at the relationship between themselves, others, and society. Why don't you come and experience the fun of meeting people at the work camp?
Voluntary Workcamps in Summer
This is a meeting of practitioners and researchers involved in ESD, organized by RCE Hyogo-Kobe, where people who are practicing ESD in NPOs, companies, governments, schools, etc. and who are interested in SDGs gather to discuss the meaning of sustainable development and ways to promote ESD, exchanging information on ESD/SDGs in Japan and abroad.
Conference on Studiess into ESD Practices
Through the workshop, we will take time to reflect on the activities of the current year and create a business plan for the next year. We will discuss what kind of mechanisms are necessary to create various kinds of "encounters" and "connections.
and how to create new initiatives.
We will also discuss how to create new initiatives.
